to teach

TO TEACH: Raise each of the hands to the corresponding side of the head on a level with the eyes; close ends of fingers against thumb (as in “&”); push the hands straight out from the head, and open the thumb and fingers, as if you had grasped something from the head and thrown it out toward some one else.

difficult

DIFFICULT: Place the “S” hands one above the other; then circle one around the other, moving both at the same time, the motion being outward and down (not from side to side). Make a show of some effort in moving the hands.

to believe

TO BELIEVE: Right vertical index, palm leftward, moved straight out from the lips to clasped hands, or right index tip from the forehead to clasped hands.

a lot, many

A LOT, MANY: Both closed supine hands open out the fingers. (The oftener this action is repeated, and the more rapid the motion, the greater the number indicated.)

to see

TO SEE: Right vertical “V” tips, palms inward, to the cheek below the eye, and then moved outward.

truth

TRUTH: Left palm supine, fingers pointing outward, right “H” hand, pointing outward, pushes its middle tip straight along the left palm from heel to tip of left index.

to tempt

TO TEMPT: Left arm pointing towards the right shoulder, and the right bent index tapping the left elbow with vigor.

regret

REGRET: With the hand in position of “A” rub it in a circular motion over the heart, with appropriate expression.

to grieve

TO GRIEVE: Both “A” hands, palm towards palm, pressed together and twisted tensely and slowly as if wringing a wet cloth.

to obey

TO OBEY: Hold “A” hands in front, backs down; let both hands drop, opening them the while; some carry the hands up toward right shoulder and drop from there.
